Expectations of Physical Therapy
- You will be here approximately 8-12 weeks, depending on your diagnosis. Sometimes patients are here for longer or shorter periods of time. Most patients start at three times per week, progressing eventually to twice per week. Your prescription may say 6 weeks: either you will need an updated prescription or to go for a re-evaluation. Do not lapse in physical thereapy.
- Your pain will go from:
- Sharp to dull to tightness
- Constant to intermittent
- General to localized
Getting rid of pain is only 50% of rehabilitation. Excercise to regain strength and to train key muscle groups (i.e., the rotator cuff for the shoulder) is just as important.
Understanding progression in physical therapy: You get rid of pain first, then work to increase range of motion, build strength, and eventually fine-tune exercise with functional and sport-specific training.
- It is important for you to be responsible about coming for physical therapy. You are also responsible for doing your home exercises. Consistency will prevent a “yo-yo” effect, where pain comes and goes without steady progress. Through consistency and thorough rehabilitation, hopefully you will never need us again and will be back to your regular activities without pain.
